Clare Mitchell
I studied at Hastings College of Arts and Technology for 8 years, pursuing life drawing whilst working as an assistant at the Stained Glass studio of Alan Wright. Gradually I began to concentrate on landscape painting and have worked exclusively ‘en plein air’ since 2002.
I work in oils outdoors all year round, mostly in my native Sussex, and undertake a trip to the Highlands and Islands of Scotland to paint annually.
I love to immerse myself in the subject. It is at turns exhilarating and frustrating working with the changing light, tides and weather. Time is often short as shadows turn and lengthen, tides advance or recede, or a setting sun rapidly diminishes.
The works I produce express a unique time and place , a result of my direct experience of the variety of natural and manmade landscapes that I encounter.
I have been showing and selling my work in numerous galleries since 1998, including the Royal Society of Marine Artists, and annually since 2005 with the Royal Miniature Society at the Mall Galleries, London.
I have shown annually at the Rye Society of Artists since 2004 and I am currently represented by Avocet Gallery, Rye Art Gallery, Wing Gallery at Wadhurst, and Jetty Gallery, in Oban.
